If ‘Assault Weapons’ Are Bad…Why Does DHS Want to Buy 7,000 of Them for ‘Personal Defense’?

The more I follow the all-out assault on the Second Amendment by the Democrats and the Obama Administration, the more enraged I become about it. Make no mistake, an assault on the Second Amendment is an assault on the Bill of Rights itself.

For example, DHS is attempting to procure 7,000 5.56x45mm “personal defense weapons” (PDW). The 5.56x45mm NATO round is standard round for what the media would refer to as an “assault rifle”—specifically, the select-fire M-16 rifle. The M-16 is the standard-issue rifle to troops in our military; it features both semi-automatic and fully-automatic select fire. A select-fire M-16 is considered a Class 3 “restricted” weapon by the federal government and cannot be purchased by a civilian without the proper Federal Firearms license (FFL).

The civilian-model of the M-16 select-fire rifle is called the AR-15, which does not feature select-fire and can only fire semi-automatically—meaning: one bullet fired for each pull of the trigger.

So, the government is referring to what the mainstream media, congressional democrats and the White House calls an “assault weapon” as a “personal defense weapon,” which is suitable for personal protection. Conversely, the same individuals call a civilian model AR-15 rifle an “assault weapon” which poses a lethal threat to the populace at large.

Interestingly, the type of weapons being requested by DHS are M4-based, select-fire weapons with shortened barrels (SBR). The M4 is a shortened version of the full-size M-16 rifle, commonly referred to as a “carbine model.” This weapon is designed for close-quarters combat. The smaller size of a PDW lends itself to better concealment, say under a large, bulky jacket or coat.

Once again, what’s good for the goose is not good for the gander. While government officials can arm up with select-fire weaponry which is deemed “suitable for personal protection,” a civilian cannot not even arm up with a legal semi-auto firearm like the AR-15 rifle if the dems get their way.

I think we know who poses the danger to the populace at large: a government that usurps the U.S. Constitution!

The Blaze reported:

The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to acquire 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO “personal defense weapons” (PDW) — also known as “assault weapons” when owned by civilians. The solicitation, originally posted on June 7, 2012, comes to light as the Obama administration is calling for a ban on semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines.

Citing a General Service Administration (GSA) request for proposal (RFP), Steve McGough of RadioViceOnline.com reports that DHS is asking for the 7,000 “select-fire” firearms because they are “suitable for personal defense use in close quarters.” The term select-fire means the weapon can be both semi-automatic and automatic. Civilians are prohibited from obtaining these kinds of weapons.

The RFP describes the firearm as “Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) – 5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense use in close quarters and/or when maximum concealment is required.” Additionally, DHS is asking for 30 round magazines that “have a capacity to hold thirty (30) 5.56x45mm NATO rounds.”

Republican New York state Sen. Greg Ball also issued a press release this week bringing attention to the weapons purchase request.

Calls made to DHS seeking information regarding whether or not the RFP was accepted and fulfilled were not immediately returned on Saturday.

Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Thursday introduced legislation that would enact a so-called “assault weapons” ban. The bill would ban more than 150 firearms and limit magazines to 10 rounds. There is no expiration date on Feinstein’s bill.
