How would Obama have treated Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng if he looked like Trayvon Martin? For all of the outcry for justice and controversy of Trayvon’s shooting death, and the willingness of the Obama administration to fan the flames of racial tension, where is the concern for man who is still alive, 40 years of age, blind and being persecuted for his stand on human rights inside China?
Having somehow escaped house arrest, Chen found his way to the US Embassy where he had hoped he might find refuge and support. Instead of finding that support, he found a cold shoulder. I cannot imagine this man’s disappointment and horror knowing that he and his family would now be further punished by his oppressors. Indeed, the beating and detention of Chen’s supporters soon followed outside a hospital where he was being treated. The self-educated lawyer has long been the object of derision and harassment by Chinese officials for his promotion of human dignity and freedom. He has opposed China’s “one child” policies of abortion and forced sterilization. One might imagine that this man would be warmly embraced by the Embassy of the nation that leads the the “free world,” but instead he was treated like a nuisance. Apparently, he was beguiled into returning to the custody of his oppressors under a set of false pretenses. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is reported to have said, “His choices and our values.”
The Obama administration then claimed to have found a “resolution” to Chen’s predicament with a series of platitudes. He was convinced that if he would elect to remain in China he would be allowed to relocate away from the overbearing officials he had exposed. Chen said he was then told by US officials that if he stayed at the embassy he would forfeit any possibility of reunion with his family, who would be left to the auspices of the corrupt officials who had already made their lives miserable. He was also told by US Embassy officials that they would accompany him to ensure the Chinese government made good on their promise. Chen soon left, but said, “I feel a little bit tricked.” Embassy officials, who had promised to stay with him, then promptly dropped him off at a hospital–left and refused to answer his phone calls!
Considering the principles America has historically championed since its inception, is this how the President should be responding? This is nothing short of cowardly. It weakens the position of dissidents worldwide. It should be another reason, on a list of many, as to why Obama should be removed from office–ASAP!
In 1983, President Reagan – in defiance of his own aides, proclaimed the cold reality of the Soviet Union by calling it a “an evil empire.” While the Washington establishment derided Reagan’s words, dissident Natan Sharansky wrote that Reagan’s words filled the hearts of those imprisoned in the Soviet gulag with joy. “Tapping on walls and talking through toilets, word of Reagan’s ‘provocation’ quickly spread through the prison,” Natan said. “We dissidents were ecstatic. Finally, the leader of the Free World had spoken the truth — a truth that burned inside the heart of each and every one of us.”
Obama is building the legacy of a pariah.
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney:
“Mr. Chen has sought freedom in a bastion of freedom, an embassy of the United States of America. Aren’t we proud of the fact that people seeking freedom come to our embassy to find it? The reports are… that our own government… sped up the process of his decision to leave the embassy because they wanted to move to a series of discussions Mr. Geithner and our Secretary of State are going to have with China. If these reports are true, this is a dark day for freedom and it is a day of shame for the Obama administration.“
Freedom is not an imposition; socialism must be imposed. Those of us conservatives, that you idiot leftists think are extremists because we want to preserve liberty, are truly in the dark–maybe even stupid. Ignorance is something that can be remedied, but willing ignorance–the refusal to even examine the conservative perspective–is the definition of intolerance.
Obama is only concerned with human rights when and if they provide him an opportunity to advance his Marxian master plan. Instead of leveraging our financial arrangement with China, Obama is kissing their ass. Instead of arguing for the improvement of human rights in China, and approaching this from a position of moral superiority, he has chosen to barter from from the narrow ledge of delinquency as the bad debtor.
Look at all the people Obama has thrown under the bus: Tony Rezko, Jeremiah Wright, William Ayers, the freedom loving people of Iran in 2009, Netanyahu and the nation of Israel–even his own grandmother, whom he claimed had stereotypical racist views. No one is safe from the wheels of Bambi’s bus. The only thing good in this equation is that Obama is providing nails for his own political coffin.
